Wallasey A.C. scored 13 firsts, 4 seconds and 5 thirds in their inter-club visit to Sale last Saturday.
Triple victories went to senior Brian McGrath in the high jump (5ft. 5in.), long jump (18ft. 4½in.) and triple jump (35ft. 8½in.), and junior Eric Taylor - shot (36ft. 5½in.), discus (98ft.) and javelin (132ft.), whilst club coach Carl Gee took the senior discus with 111ft. 1in., was 2nd in the shot (34ft. 5½in) and 3rd in the javelin with 108ft. 10in.
Although the afternoon was warm, heavy showers hampered the field athletes who often found the implements difficult to hold.
It was not surprising that Terry Fleming, who had tossed the discus out to 134ft. the previous Thursday evening, could only make 116ft. on this occasion - although, here again, it proved to be a winning throw.
Wallasey's other youth thrower, Terry Leach, was second with 110ft. and 4th in the shot with 29ft. 6in., behind dual winner Fleming who passed the 34ft. mark.
SUPERB ON TRACK
Keeping pace with the "field" men, Wallasey's runners put up some great performances, the best of these being Alan Kin's winning 440 yards run in which he broke the club record with 52.5 seconds, following this with a 10.4 seconds 100 yards and a 24.8 220 yards.
Pete Lewis duplicated Alan's feats in the youth events in which he ran 3rd in both the 100 (11.2) and 220 (25.5), then went on to win the "quarter" in 55.8 seconds.
Wallasey's "mighty atoms", Phillip Keating and Steve Daniels showed their paces in the under-13 mile, which Phil won in 4.27.5 with Steve 3rd in 6 minutes.
An unfit Dave Lockley ran in the combined senior/junior 2,000 metres steeplechase and, although in some discomfort over the hurdles, won his section in 6 minutes 25.6 seconds when finishing 2nd overall in the event.
NORTHERN JUNIOR
Some fine running was seen in the combined senior/junior 880 yards in which Alan Keating came from behind to tie 2nd place with Barrie Smith in 2 minutes 1.4 seconds. Doug Hanna was in 5th place with 2-1.8 and junior Johnny Jones 7th in 2-5.2 - both of which are personal best performances.
Wallasey A.C. send four juniors and one youth to Grimsby today for an assault on the Northern Counties Junior and Youth Championships.
Alan Kin runs in the 100 and 220, Johnny Jones, 1 miles; Dave Lockley, 2,000 metres steeplechase; Ernie Taylor, javelin, and Ian Wilson, youths' 440 yards.
A winning performance at Grimsby will give direct entry into the A.A.A. Junior National Championships next month and an added incentive is the venue, which this year is a Kirkby, Liverpool, track well known to Wallasey members.
INTER-TOWN
Although depleted by absentees to the northern and Ellesmere College, where the grammar school have a match, Wallasey should put up a good fight today in an attempt to win the Inter-Town Trophy at Lingham Park for the third consecutive year. Events for both boys and girls will start promptly at 2.30 p.m. at the Lingham track, where seating is available.
