Once again the Wednesday evening meetings at Port Sunlight are proving their worth to local athletes in need of competition.
Last week Barbara Banks improved her 880 time by 3 seconds to 2 mins. 44.8 secs.; whilst Colin McDonnell brought his time down to 2.26, knocking 2.8 secs., off his previous best, and in doing so he led Les Watcham home for the first time. Les did 2.29 in plimsols, some 4 secs, slower than his best.
In the 2 miles Brian Woolford allowed A Camden of Wirral A.C. to 'get away' in the first two laps and was never able to make up the leeway. He finished 2nd in 9 mins. 31.6 secs., with Brian Chalton 6th in 10.02.
Robin Tarrant ran well in the sprints, winning the 220 in 24.7 secs., and was 2nd in the 100 in 10.8. With this return of his to form, his opponents in the Wallasey Schools' Championships today will have to show him the respect his running deserves.
CHESHIRE CHAMPIONSHIP PROSPECTS
An unfortunate clash of dates has robbed the county meeting at Port Sunlight today of most of Wallasey's junior athletes. It is estimated that twenty-four boys and girls who would normally have taken part in this meeting will be in action in the Wallasey Schools' sports to be held at the Leasowe Road playing fields this afternoon.
International Hurdler Joins Wallasey A.C.
Amongst the many new members to join the club this month is the international hurdler from Barrow, Bob Birrel. Bob, now teaching in Birkenhead, has elected to join Wallasey A.C. as second-claim member and will be competing for them in the Liverpool Parks championships next Tuesday evening.
New members will he welcome at Leasowe Road playing fields, Monday and Thursday 7-9 p.m. and Saturday 2-3 p.m.
