Today Wallasey athletes are competing in the Waterloo seven-mile road race, which is being run from Manor Road County School, Crosby.
Wallasey won the team prize in last year's race and are again hopeful of success, although these hopes suffered a setback last Saturday when it was learned that due to illness John Wright would be out of athletics for at least two weeks. All club members will wish him a speedy recovery to racing fitness.
After his fine run at Derwentwater and with the reduction in distance, Kevin Mather should be capable of being up with the leaders today and with Ron Barlow and Brian Woolford, will make quite a formidable Wallasey trio. Backing up these three will be Brian Chalton, John Young and Roy Parry.
Entries for the rare have been received from such International stars as Bruce Tulloh, a gold medal winner at the recent Tokyo Games; Ron Hill, AAA six-mile champion; the Coventry Godiva pair of Brian Kilby, AAA and European marathon champion, and Basil Heatley, runner-up in the AAA marathon this year; Roy Fowler, international cross-country champion; and British mile record holder Derek Ibbotson with a host of other top-line athletes. Add team entries from Portsmouth and Coventry Godiva, recognised as the leading road racing clubs in the country, Manchester & District LCH current Northern cross-country champions, Bolton UH, Barrow A.C. and Rochdale AC., and it will be appreciated that Wallasey have no easy task
Next Wednesday, November 13, Wallasey have entered a team in the Waterloo Round The Houses 6 x 2 mile relay, and hope to improve upon their sixth position of last year - indeed - a win is not such a remote possibility.
