Now that the track season is well under way, Wallasey athletes can be seen at Leasowe almost any evening, practising their various events.
As yet no Wallasey Athletic Club runner has made any international team this year, but the runners who train regularly at Club H.Q. are fast improving and, though they may never make any outstanding team, they will be guaranteed fitness and will have that sense of wellbeing that comes from knowing you can do something a bit better than most people.
By way of a target the club's middle distance runners can set their sights on two new best performances by Ron Barlow, who, whilst competing in the Army championships at that magnificent stadium at Aldershot, ran 1 mile in 4 mins. 15 secs, and three miles in 14 mins. 10 secs. - and, believe it or not, did not win either race!
Carl Gee looks more and more powerful each time I see him. How unfortunate that the level of competition in Cheshire means that Carl is never extended in local events and consequently lacks that extra edge that comes from hard competition when he comes up against the really good boys.
W.G.S. v. OLD BOYS
The next big event for club members is the match between the Grammar School and the Old Wallaseyans, as many club members are either at the school or attended it at one time. This meeting. to be held at the School on Tuesday should be very interesting I feel that the 880 yard race might be very exciting, for in this Dave Duncan of the School, who has come very close to the immortal Don Anderson's record for the distance, is against the powerful Brian Chalton, and this should be quite a race.
After this, the next race is the Lever Trophy for Merseyside clubs. The competition is razor sharp and times and distances are always first class, so keep up the training, club members.
