Four young Wallasey Athletic Club members, running for Wallasey Technical Grammar School, gained a personal triumph in this year's Northern Schools Championships.
The championships were held at Lyme Park, Disley, on a hard, very hilly course covered in snow and slush. The Wallasey team gained a fine sixth place, while Leeds Grammar School won the senior race over five miles. The team was led home by Bob Warburton in 31st place, with Bob Brimage 41st, and Gary Fair 63rd. The team's high placing is due to their fine packing.
This was the first of four races taking place in the next eight days for the young athletes which includes the National Schools Championships next Saturday when Bob Warburton and Bob Brimage will be running for Cheshire.
Another successful young athlete is Stephen Scully, who must be congratulated on being selected for the A.T.C. National Cross-Country team.
On Sunday Barbara Banks left for Maryland, U.S.A, and today she will represent England in the Ladies International Cross-Country Championships. We all wish her good luck as she is running against the best cross-country runners in the world.
Today Dave Lockley will be travelling to an indoor invitation race at Cosford, providing a troublesome foot injury clears up.
Mike Whiteside and Phil Wealthy will be running in a seven mile event at Leigh, whilst tomorrow is the final winter track meeting at Warrington, when Phil Wealthy will be competing again in the 3,000 metres and is hoping for a good run.
