The road relays organised by Wallasey Athletic Club, as part of the Wirral Festival of Sport, was witnessed by many who took advantage of the fine weather.
The ladies event was very poorly supported, but the main event of the day, the senior men's relay, attracted an entry of 28 teams, the Wallasey team finishing in a very creditable 7th position.
Last Saturday afternoon a small group of athletes from Wallasey Athletic Club travelled to the Pilkington's track in St. Helens, to take part in an open meeting organised by that club. Several personal bests were recorded, and other performances indicated a return of form for the remainder.
In this, his first competition for the club, Stephen Henfrey recorded personal best performances in both his 800m and 200m. His brother Neil was not to be outdone, he also recorded a personal best for his 200m, both finishing second in their respective races.
For reasons best known to the Merseyside Schools selection committee, Ian Macleod was not thought good enough to represent Merseyside Schools in the coming English Schools. As if to emphasise his wrongful dismissal from the 100m flat or relay squad, he coasted into second place in the 200m, recording a personal best equalling time of 23.4 secs.
Other personal performances, recorded at the meeting came from Christine McGee, Sheila Rae, Pete Jones and Ian Macleod. Ian's 400m performance showing again to the selection committee that he is fit and fully warrants the chance to contest the 100m at the English Schools.
Tomorrow, Saturday, June 30th, is the date of the Northern Under 20 Championships in Hull. Wallasey has two entrants, Ian in the sprints and Kevin McGee in the 1500m. On form, both should qualify for the final and ought to record personnel bests. To do this Ian needs to better 11.4 for his 100m and 23.4 for his 200m, Kevin needs to better 3 mins 59.8 sees for the 1500m.
An update on representative selections affecting club members, some of which have been turned down because of clashing with previously arranged fixtures, are very impressive for such a small club as ours and are a mark of the dedication to the sport of athletics which is prevalent within the Wallasey Athletic Club.
