Last Saturday the Cheshire County Cross-Country championships were held at Arrowe Park under very wet and muddy conditions. The senior race was won by H. Phipps of Sale Harriers, the team trophy going to Wirral A.C. who had a total of 66 points, Altrincham were second with 89 and Sale third with 100.
The first Wallasey runner home was Brian Woolford, an ex-marathon international, who finished 6th and has therefore been selected to run for Cheshire in the lnter-Counties next week. John Wright was the next home in 20th position.
The junior race was run in conjunction with the seniors so Barrie Smith in 24th place, Alan Keating 25th, Ken Roscoe 33rd and Mike McNamee 36th all counted for the senior team which then totalled 144 points.
The remainder of the team were Len Durkin in 45th place, Mike Whiteside 47th, Mike Teahan 51st and Doug Hanna who was placed 53rd in a field of 55.
Wirral Athletic Club also won the youths' event with 20 points, having a very strong team comprising Hadfield, who finished 1st, Barnes 4th, Davies 7th and Winstanley 8th.
Wallasey A.C. took the silver medals with Dave Lockley,, making a welcome come-back after an Injury and finishing 5th, Steve Walker gaining 10th position from Johnny Jones who had overtrained and was 30 seconds behind in 11th place,
John Horobin earned his first medal by being placed 16th, Phil Wealthy took 19th position and Bob McCaig 21st. There being only four to count, Wallasey had a total score of 42.
Today the Liverpool & District Cross-Country Union are holding their annual championships at Sutton and Wallasey Athletic Club has entered teams In the event.
