Wallasey Athletic Club's road racing team last Saturday chalked up their fourth successive win when they journeyed to the Lake, District to score a brilliant victory in the annual Windermere to Kendal race.
Ron Barlow scored a noteworthy individual success by winning in the fast time for the 8½ mile course of 40 minutes 16 seconds,
This was probably his greatest win to date and he was magnificently supported by John Wright who was only thirty yards behind in second place after out-running Blackpool's Dave Swarbrick.
These, three were soon breaking slightly away from the field of over 180 runners and they ran in a tight group until they reached the last mile which slopes down steeply into Kendal, when Barlow fairly plunged down the hill to quickly break Swarbrick with Wright chasing him spiritedly over the finishing line.
Meanwhile Brian Woolford had been steadily working his way through the field in his usual relentless manner and by finishing in seventh place he completed Wallasey's three counting runners who totalled 10 pts. against Rochdale Harriers 21 and Bolton United's 34, Wright's time was 40:24, and Woolford's 41:18.
With international Colin Robinson finishing fourth and several other famous athletes in the first twenty it can be seen that the Wallasey runners produced on this occasion a standard of running which should bring them more victories.
Returning to competition after an enforced break in training Kevin Mather ran steadily to finish 31st in 43 mins. 22 secs. with Brian Chalton following in 52nd position in 44 mins. 33 secs.
Their next race is at St. Helens today when they run in the annual Sutton Harriers 7 mile event when they should again be successful despite the presence of Manchester A.C. as well as old rivals Blackpool and Bolton.
