The cross-country season has several innovations so far as the local clubs are concerned.
The new law forbidding youths under 18 years of age to compete against junior and senior runners, even over three miles, virtually ended the West. Lancs. novice race of competitors, and resulted in most novices coming from the youth age group. Accordingly, the West Lancs. Cross-Country Association have lost no time in transferring the H. S. Finney Trophy to a new race, in which clubs may run their best teams provided the competitors have not been previously placed in the race in previous years. This race will be held for the first time on Saturday, December 5.
In addition the Liverpool & District Cross-Country Union have evolved a cross-country league in which six clubs will take part. The programme has been arranged so that it will be completed before Christmas thereby leaving championship season early in 1954, free from inter-club contest.
Wallasey's first fixture is on Saturday, October 17 at Sefton's H.Q., West Derby. This year's Monstre meet will take place at Boundary Harriers H.Q., Old Roan, on October 3.
Len Platt has now returned from his tour with the Great Britain team, who visited Berlin and Stockholm. He had a most enjoyable time, any comments most favourably on the sports camp at which they stayed in Stockholm. Facilities for all sports are included in the layout of the grounds and excellent living accommodation combined with good food completed an athlete's paradise.
His performance in the hop, step and jump at Berlin was up to his usual standard 45ft. 8½ins., but at Stockholm he failed to register a good jump finishing in 4th position on both occasions.
The annual general meeting of the Wallasey Club will be held at the Roycroft Ballroom, Seaview Road, next Friday at 7:30 p.m. Nominations for officers and committee should be sent to Mr. C. W. Gee, hon. secretary, 78 King Street, Wallasey, by tomorrow.
