Bedford Half Marathon - 13.1 Miles - Sunday 14 December 2008


Sue Nunn made a welcome return from injury to complete the Bedford Half Marathon in a time of 01:47:21 for 613th place. This was a personal best for Sue, who can be proud of her run on a hilly course.

Snowdonia Marathon - 26.21 Miles - Sunday 26 October 2008


David Godwin ran one of the toughest marathons in the country, he joined over 1100 runners who braved the difficult course. Dave completed the race in 4:47:43 for 848th place and over an hour quicker than last year. This is the third time Dave has run the event.

Amsterdam Half Marathon - 13.1 Miles - Sunday 19 October 2008


Elwyn Jones


A group of Wallasey runners headed to Holland for the Amsterdam half marathon. Bob Brimage produced an excellent performance to finish 81st in 01:23:33, Les Pullin also ran well completing the course in 01:47:47. Lisa Carney came close to beating the 2 hour barrier just missing by 31 seconds and can be satisfied with a personal best. Great North Run - 13.1 Miles - Sunday 05 October 2008


Keith McLaughlin and Jane Vick completed the world's largest half marathon in Newcastle. Keith finished in 01:25:22 and Jane 02:02:47 (this was Jane's 8th GNR).

Asics Liverpool 10k - 10 Km - Sunday 05 October 2008


Seven runners completed the Asics Liverpool 10k, pick of the bunch for the men was Connor McArdle who returned a time of 37:47 for 35th place. Claire Walton continued her rich vein of form by finishing third lady overall, picking up a cup and a healthy prize for her efforts. Claire completed the over length course in 39 minutes dead. Diane McArdle completed her first 10k race in 57:49.

Wirral Seaside Run - 5 Km - Sunday 05 October 2008


Greg Jones won the final race of the 2008 seaside series, he completed the course on a windy day in just under 18 minutes. Results to follow.



Hoylake 10k - 10 Km - Sunday 21 September 2008

On a near perfect late summers day for running with the usual gale force winds strangely absent, several Wallasey runners took advantage of the good conditions to record some excellent times and set a few personal bests. 1st man home for Wallasey was Phil Bird in 39:12 finishing in 12th place. Tricia Jones was the first Wallasey lady home in 42:05, finishing in 2nd place in the ladies race and 38th overall. Ken Hilton set a PB going under 45 minutes for the first time in 43:43 to finish in 65th place. Mike Griffiths was close behind in 44:02 to finish in 74th place. Phil Wilkinson also set a PB finishing in 45:46 in 99th place. Mike Stanley led Wallasey home in the August Wirral Seaside Run. Mike dipped under 17 minutes for 4th place. He was closely followed by Greg Jones 5th (17:11) and Tony Barbat 6th (17:19). Heavy rain destroyed some of the runners' numbers and also soaked the large contingent of hardy Wallasey supporters.

Trentham Classic Triathlon - - Sunday 27 July 2008


Two Wallasey members entered the Trentham Classic Triathlon, father and daughter Dave and Claire Walton competed in the race in Trentham Gardens. Club captain Dave finished 42nd and Claire 6th. Both runners can be proud of their performances, Claire also had the honour of being the fastest female on the 10K run.

Ironman Triathlon - - Sunday 13 July 2008


Pat Riley completed the Karnten Ironman Triathlon in Austria in a superb time of 12 hours 34 minutes 43 seconds. He took an amazing 1 hour 15 minutes off his previous time. The event included a 3.8 km swim, 180 km bike ride and then a full marathon. Pat's times were swim 01:26:48, bike 06:14:03 and run 04:32:12 and 22 in the two transitions. Pat can feel proud of this performance and has earned himself a well earned rest.



Wirral Seaside Run - 5 Km - Wednesday 02 July 2008


Greg Jones shaved 16 seconds off his seaside best to complete the course in an impressive 17 minutes dead for 5th place. Phil Bird followed him home in 18:25 for 10th place.

Penny Lane Striders 10k - 10 Km - Sunday 22 June 2008


5 of Wallasey Athletic Club's male runners joined the 486 record entry in the popular Penny Lane Striders 10k. Heat is normally the challenge in this race, however, on this occasion it was the wind. The 40 mph cross wind, whilst not hampering the runners directly, meant that they were buffeted for most of the course along Otterspool promenade. Greg Jones made light of the conditions to record 36:17 for 18th place, he was followed by Tony Barbat 36:41 in 24th. Steve Lampkin set a personal best recording 40:39 and 80th place.

Capenhurst 10k - 10 Km - Sunday 15 June 2008


Tony Barbat enjoyed ideal running conditions at the Capenhurst 10k, the combination of an overcast sky and a cooling breeze along with a flat course helped him to a personal best of 36:17 and 4th place.

Bala Half Ironman - - Sunday 08 June 2008


Dave Walton attempted his first half ironman in and around Lake Bala. In hot conditions club captain Dave did extremely well to finish in an overall time of 05:37. His splits were as follows: 2000m swim 38mins, 54 mile cycle 2hrs 58 mins, 1/2 Marathon 1hr 51 mins - Total time including the 2 transitions (10mins) 5hrs 37mins.Dave said "Both the cycle and the run were extremely hilly and the temperatures on the run were scorching. The run course was described on the web site as brutal and the event not for the feint hearted. They weren't wrong!"



Wirral Seaside Run - 5 Km - Wednesday 04 June 2008


Runners had the choice of two local races on the same night and 7 Wallasey runners chose the 4th Wirral Seaside run of the season. First Wallasey man home was Phil Bird in 8th place in 18:23, he was just in front of Steve Lampkin in 18:48 (9th). Heidi Walker took 70 seconds off her seaside best to finish in 31:05.

The heat of earlier in the day was replaced by an overcast evening to the relief of the Wallasey runners in the Birkenhead Park 5 mile race. The second running on the new course consisted of 3 laps of the lower park. First Wallasey man home was Tony Barbat in 29:28 for 20th place. He was followed by Bob Brimage in 30:50 for 26th place, Bob won the over 55 category for this effort. Next up was John Cottrell in 31:56 (31st), John also won hios age category. Tunnel 10k - 10 Km - Sunday 01 June 2008

13 Wallasey runners entered the Tunnel 10k, overcast conditions were welcomed after the heat of the previous day. The uphill tunnel section of one mile always takes its toll in the runners of this race. Mastering is first for Wallasey was Steve Wilkinson in 37:41 for 17th place. Connor McArdle was next home in 38:23 for 24th place. Hot on his heels was Mark Beckett 38:59 (32nd) and Phil Bird 39:11 (36th). Colin Benson set a personal best with 40:41. Slideshow available here. Thurstaston Summer Multi Terrain Challenge - 6 Miles - Tuesday 20 May 2008


4 Wallasey runners entered the Thurstaston Summer Multi Terrain Challenge. Bob Brimage showed a return to form with an excellent run to finish 14th overall and won first prize in his age category. Bob completed the challenging 6 mile course in 40:11. Joe Johnson was second Wallasey man home in 41:55 (21st). They were followed up by Tricia Jones in 47:15 (55th) and Elwyn Jones 61:58 (122nd).

Over 1800 runners took part in the Shell Chester Half Marathon and 6 Wallasey runners were amongst them. The ladies team came in an excellent 5th thanks to Ann Taylor-Kilbane, Nicky Rimmer and Sue Nunn also completing the course were Jane Vick and Lisa Carney. Colin Palmer and Arthur Wilson had good runs, Colin returned 01:25:25 for 53rd and Arthur 01:31:08 for 145th.

Liverpool Women's 10k - 10 Km - Wednesday 07 May 2008


The increase in temperature for the women's 10k race made it tough on the competitors. Of the 1,700 plus entrants only the winner went under 40 minutes. Most runners were a minute or two down on their best. First home out of the four Wallasey ladies taking part was Vicky Kehoe in 47:17 for 45th place. Other finishers were Nicky Rimmer 49:57 (80th), Rachel Saunders 52:00 (117th) and Nicci Davies 53:58 (163rd).

A sunny evening greeted 13 Wallasey runners in the 3rd seaside run of the series, the competitors also experienced the winds directly into their faces for most of the course. Flora London Marathon - 26.21 Miles - Sunday 13 April 2008


Five W.A.C. runners headed south for the Flora London Marathon on Sunday 14th April. All the runners produced praiseworthy performances. Richard Saunders knocked six minutes off his personal best to finish in an excellent 3:09:17. Colin Benson making his marathon debut ran well to record 03:23 dead and Phil Bird also had a good run and a personal best in 03:38:13. Plaudits also to the two ladies who ran very well, Rachel Saunders completed the course in 04:09:17 and Tricia Jones who picked up an injury after a few miles and battled bravely for 04:17:48.

Three of Wallasey's ladies completed the Wilmslow half marathon along with 3446 other runners. The team of Sue Nunn (nee Barraclough), Jane Vick and Lisa Carney came 31st. Official times were reported some three minutes slower than actual Sue Nunn 01:58 (Official 02:02:19 2176th, 437th Lady), Jane Vick 02:01 (02:04:34 2324th, 93rd Lady over 40) and Lisa Carney 02:07 (02:10:38 2685th, 629th lady). Well done girls.

Fleetwood 10 mile race - 10 Miles - Sunday 23 March 2008


Tony Barbat ran the Fleetwood 10 mile race on Easter Sunday in 1 hours 3 minutes 23 seconds for 12th place. Sand had blown onto the course making the first and last mile more difficult and the windy conditions made for a testing run.

Wirral Seaside Run - 5 Km - Sunday 16 March 2008


Blustery conditions left no hiding place for the participants on the first Wirral Seaside run of 2008. A 20 knot headwind took at least a minute out of most of the runners. Connor McArdle continued his good form to be the first home in 18:54. He was followed by Tony Barbat (19:10), Steve Lampkin (19:34), Greg Jones (19:44) and Colin Palmer (19:45). Rhayader Round the Lakes 20 - 20 Miles - Saturday 15 March 2008


3 runners from Wallasey continued their Flora London Marathon preparations by taking part in the Rhayader Round the Lakes 20 Mile Race in Wales. On a wet day Richard and Rachel Saunders were accompanied around the undulating course by Tricia Jones. All the runners were glad to complete the course, Richard recorded 2:37 (101st), Rachel 3:16 (268th) and Tricia 2:56 (196th).

Wallasey A.C. had 8 representatives at the Mizuno Liverpool Half Marathon. On a windy day Steve Wilkinson showed good form and was first man home in 56th place (01:22:48), he was followed by Paul Richardson 102nd (01:26:48). Colin Benson had a great run to finish in 01:28:39.
