The value of Wallasey Athletic Club's six weeks training programme has been proved. Wallasey won their first match of the season in a three cornered race against Liverpool H. & A.C. and the Fleet Air Arm (Kirkham) at Woolton last Saturday.
Today a club run will take place from the headquarters at the Tennis Pavilion behind No. 18 Green Lane. Trial runs are invited and a slow pack will be run for new members.
Wallasey's next match will be a return race against Liverpool Harriers, at Green Lane, Wallasey Village starting at 3 p.m. Saturday, 8th December.
At Woolton, Wallasey Athletic Club defeated Liverpool Harriers and the Fleet Air Arm (Kirkham) in a three cornered race over four miles of the Liverpool H. & A.C. country.
This was the first race of the season. It was a cold, clear day, and the course lay over a variety of country including road, grass and plough. From a fast start, Wallasey placed three men with the leading pack, the team captain, J. Edwards, G. Williams and A. P. Watson. Liverpool set the pace for the first half, when Edwards went into the lead. Stephenson, of Fleet Air Arm, challenged him at three miles, but Edwards responded and drew away from him. There was an excellent finish along a quarter mile of road, when Stephenson tried in vain to make up the distance between himself and Edwards. The Wallasey man was first home in 28 mins. 18 secs., with Stephenson (F.A.A.). second in 28 mins. 22 secs.
From three miles, G. Williams and A. P. Watson paced one another in an effort to catch up Liverpool's first man Burrows, and they tied for 4th and 5th places in 30 mins. 36 secs. J. Byrne finished 12th, R. Hubbard 15th, C. F. Peers 16th and J. Williams 17th. The first six men counted in the team placings, and the scores were as follows:- Wallasey 1, 3, 4, 12, 15, 16 Total; 53 points.
Fleet Air Arm 2, 6, 10, 11, 13, 14 Total 56 points.
Liverpool H. & A.C. 3, 7, 8, 9, 17, 19 Total 63 points.
Wallasey junior team ran an excellent race against Liverpool Harriers junior team. As this was for all members of the junior team, their first cross-country race. It does credit to their training during the six weeks course organised by the Wallasey A.C.
Wallasey were beaten by the narrow margin of one point. Placings were as follows:
Liverpool H. & A.C: 1, 2, 6, 9. Total 18 points. Wallasey A.C. (junior) R. Simpson 3, T. K. D. Murdoch 4, Molyneux 5, J. Kelly 7. Total 19 points.
