Welcome to the Wallasey Athletic Club Website
Borders League - Deeside - 19:30 Wednesday 25th April
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of John Wright, a long standing member of more than 60 years, and a stalwart of Wallasey Athletic Club.
John had been an integral part of the cross country and road racing teams; held several positions on the Committee and his services to the Club were acknowledge by being awarded an Honorary Life Time Vice Presidency.
In the late 1950s until the mid 1960s John was one of the elite runners in the area, was twice the Liverpool and District Cross Country Senior Champion, a Cheshire County Cross Country Senior Champion and was captain of the all conquering Wallasey A.C. cross country and road relay teams. He was regularly selected by Cheshire to run in the Inter Counties Cross Country Championships.
Together with team mates that included Ron Barlow, Pete White, Brian Woolford, Tony and Phil the Townsend brothers, Dave White, Kevin Mather, Hugh Pritchard, Roy Parry and Brian Charlton and others, Wallasey Athletic Club won five County Championships, and although they did not win the L&D Championships they were 2nd team home on three occasions. They also won several prestigious Road Relay races, and were a respected team throughout the North and particularly North West of England.
John continued to be an active member of the Committee until recently, and played an active part in the Club’s Centenary celebrations in 2006.
John is part of the Wallasey Athletic Club legacy and deserves the appropriate respect. He was a great servant to WAC, the Club was fortunate to have him as a member, and he will be greatly missed.
For further information please see the history section of the Wallasey Athletic Club web site - John Wright.
